What does a French–Portuguese interpreter do?

I facilitate oral communication between French speakers and Portuguese speakers during medical, administrative, legal, banking, property or professional appointments. I convey each person's words faithfully, in both directions, so everyone understands each other.

What is the difference between an interpreter and a translator?

A translator works with written documents. An interpreter works orally, in person or remotely, facilitating live communication between people who do not speak the same language.

Why hire a professional interpreter in the Algarve?

A professional interpreter ensures faithful, neutral and confidential communication. In a medical, legal or administrative setting, a misunderstood word can have serious consequences. My on-the-ground knowledge of the Algarve also helps anticipate local customs.

Who are your services for?

French speakers living in or visiting the Algarve: individuals, families, retirees, entrepreneurs and investors. I also support businesses in their dealings with Portuguese contacts.

Which languages do you work with?

I work mainly between French and Portuguese. I can also use English for logistics when helpful, but the core interpreting is between French and Portuguese.

Do you offer document translation?

Yes, alongside interpreting. I can translate deeds, certificates, contracts or letters to help you understand your documents. For certified translations with legal force, I refer you to a sworn translator.

Can you accompany me to hospital in the Algarve?

Yes. I accompany you to hospitals and hospital centres in the Algarve, notably in Faro and Portimão, during consultations, examinations or hospital stays, so you understand healthcare professionals and are understood.

Do you accompany me to private clinics and specialists?

Yes. I work in private clinics and with specialists, from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António: cardiologists, gynaecologists, dermatologists, ophthalmologists, dentists and others, for consultations, examinations or follow-ups.

Do you intervene in medical emergencies?

Subject to availability, yes. Contact me as soon as possible by WhatsApp or phone. For a life-threatening emergency, first dial 112, then let me know so I can assist if possible.

Can you explain medical terminology?

Yes. I translate and clarify common medical terms between French and Portuguese so you understand the diagnosis, treatment and instructions. Medical decisions, however, remain the sole responsibility of your medical team.

Are you present during examinations or procedures?

I can be present during consultations and examinations to facilitate the exchange. For the operating theatre, access depends on the facility and the doctor; I remain available before and after to translate the explanations.

Can you accompany me to property viewings?

Yes. As a property interpreter in the Algarve, I accompany French speakers during viewings, from Lagos to Tavira, so you understand the descriptions, conditions and questions from the agent or seller.

Can we visit several properties in one day?

Yes. I offer full-day viewing packages across several properties, often more efficient. We plan the itinerary together based on the municipalities involved.

Do you accompany me to estate agencies and the notary?

Yes. I accompany you to agencies and developers for mandates and offers, and to the notary for signing deeds and preliminary sales agreements, so you understand each clause before signing.

Do you support the whole property purchase process?

Yes. From the first viewing to the notarial signing, including the bank, notary and lawyer, I facilitate communication at every stage of your purchase in Portugal.

Can you accompany me to AIMA?

Yes. I accompany you to AIMA for residency, registration and renewal procedures, to facilitate communication with the agents.

Do you accompany me to Finanças and Segurança Social?

Yes. I help at Finanças with tax matters, your tax number and declarations, and at Segurança Social with social coverage and affiliation.

Do you accompany me to IMT and the Câmara Municipal?

Yes. I accompany you to the IMT for labour matters, and to the Câmara Municipal for permits, planning licences, certificates and local procedures.

Do you accompany me to water and electricity providers?

Yes. I liaise with water, electricity, gas and internet providers for subscriptions, cancellations or disputes.

Can you accompany me to my bank in Portugal?

Yes. As a banking interpreter in the Algarve, I provide interpreting for account opening, transfers, cards and meetings with your advisor so you understand every transaction.

Do you accompany me for a mortgage?

Yes. I translate the discussions during mortgage simulation and approval meetings, clarifying the rate, term and guarantee conditions with the advisor.

Can you accompany me to the insurance company?

Yes. I accompany you to insurance companies for quotes, claims and reimbursements, clarifying technical terms and procedures.

Can you accompany me to a lawyer?

Yes. As a legal interpreter in the Algarve, I interpret between you and your lawyer so you understand the issues, the documents and the strategy of your case.

Do you give legal advice?

No. I give no legal, tax or medical advice. I faithfully convey what is said between you and the qualified professional; it is the lawyer, notary or advisor who provides the advice.

Do you accompany me to court?

I can accompany you to court to facilitate communication with your lawyer and the services. I do not act as a court-appointed sworn interpreter; for official hearings, an accredited interpreter may be required by the court.

Can you interpret during business meetings and negotiations?

Yes. I provide interpreting for meetings, negotiations, training and interviews, faithfully translating the proposals and positions of each side without interfering in the content.

Do you support entrepreneurs and investors?

Yes. I accompany French-speaking entrepreneurs and investors in their procedures and meetings in Portugal so they communicate confidently with local partners.

Can you accompany me for school, nursery and parent-teacher meetings?

Yes. I accompany you for school, nursery or childcare enrolment, and during parent-teacher meetings, to support your children's schooling in the Algarve.

Can you help me with builders and contractors?

Yes. I accompany you with contractors, architects and tradespeople for quotes, site monitoring and explaining works, from Lagos to Albufeira or elsewhere in the Algarve.

Do you accompany me during the works?

Yes. I translate the exchanges during the build: schedule, materials, remarks and reservations, so you track progress and make your points heard.

How do I book an interpreter in the Algarve?

Book via the online form (Booking page), by WhatsApp or by phone. State the date, place, type of appointment and desired duration. I confirm my availability.

What happens after I book?

I contact you to confirm the details and make sure I understand your need. You receive a confirmation email with your appointment reference.

How quickly do you reply?

Usually within a few hours, during opening hours. For urgent requests, phone or WhatsApp is fastest.

Can I contact you before booking?

Of course. You can ask me a question by WhatsApp or phone before booking, for example to check my availability or the right type of service.

Can I cancel or change my booking?

Yes. Cancellation more than 24 hours in advance: free. Less than 24 hours: 50%. Same day or no-show: 100%. To change it, contact me as soon as possible to adjust the slot.

Do you offer urgent appointments?

Subject to availability, yes. Mention the urgency when you request it. A booking made less than 24 hours in advance may include a surcharge.

How are your services charged?

Hourly on site, a half-day or full-day flat rate, or remotely for calls and video. Prices depend on duration, type of appointment, distance and urgency.

How is travel calculated?

Portimão and up to 30 km are included. Beyond that, 0.50 €/km; for long trips, a fixed flat rate can be agreed.

Do you accept card and bank transfer, and do you issue invoices?

Yes. I accept bank transfers and common payment methods, and I issue an invoice for each assignment, useful for individuals and businesses.

Are the exchanges confidential?

Yes. Every assignment takes place with absolute discretion and confidentiality. The information exchanged is never shared.

Do you remain neutral during appointments?

Yes. I stay faithful, neutral and impartial: I convey what is said without altering it, taking sides or giving advice.

Can you guarantee the outcome of my appointment?

No. I guarantee clear and faithful communication, but not the outcome of a medical, legal, administrative or commercial procedure, which depends on the professionals and institutions involved.

Does the interpreter give advice or make decisions?

No. The interpreter facilitates communication. They do not replace the doctor, lawyer, notary, accountant, bank or administrations, and make no decisions on your behalf.

Which municipalities in the Algarve do you cover?

Across the Algarve: Aljezur, Vila do Bispo, Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, Silves, Monchique, Albufeira, Loulé, Faro, São Brás de Alportel, Olhão, Tavira, Castro Marim, Vila Real de Santo António and Alcoutim, plus coastal spots like Carvoeiro, Ferragudo, Vilamoura or Quarteira.

How long does an appointment last?

It depends on your need: from a 30-minute call to a full day. We agree the right duration together when you book.

Do you work evenings or weekends?

Yes, subject to availability. A surcharge applies in the evening after 6 pm, on Saturdays and on public holidays.

Do you offer remote interpreting?

Yes, by phone or video conference (WhatsApp, Zoom). Ideal for quick calls with the bank, a provider or a partner.
